What is Your Health Worth?

By: Jeffrey Wagner, M.D.

“Know before you go” is common lingo among travelers, but it’s also a common phrase used when discussing plastic surgery. When patients primarily focus on aspects such as the “best” type of breast implants at my Indianapolis practice, I explain that the most important decision is who will perform the cosmetic procedure.

Here are some tips for selecting a plastic surgeon you can feel confident with:

Importance of Board Certification

Only surgeons certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) are board-certified PLASTIC surgeons. ABPS-certified surgeons must complete a minimum of five years of surgical training, including a plastic surgery residency program. Through this training, they obtain hands-on technical and aesthetic experience in plastic surgery for the face, breasts and body – qualifying them to perform a comprehensive menu of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

Consider Hospital Privileges

The ideal surgery center is one that is physically attached to a hospital. This ensures that the physician is board certified and approved by the hospital. It’s also safer in the rare event of a complication. If the surgeon operates in a separate surgery center, ask about the hospital privileges of the surgeon and anesthesiologist (follow up with the hospital) and the certification of the surgery center.
